This 3,000 SF single-family residence was designed with a focus on efficiency, natural light, and seamless connection to the outdoors. Built for the enjoyment of family and friends, the home offers unobstructed views and access to the outdoor spaces, creating a perfect indoor-outdoor living experience.
Inspired by the beauty of California’s weather, this project incorporates clean, pure forms and shapes, as well as warm textures and cozy materials, to bring the homeowners’ vision to life. The design is anchored by an open-flow layout, enhanced by both natural and artificial lighting, and features low-maintenance finishes to ensure a bright, welcoming, and functional space.

This modern contemporary Manhattan Beach abode displays a unique combination of clean lines, enhanced natural light, and attention to detail from all angles. With five bedrooms and five bathrooms – including an ADU – The LMD Architecture Studio team made sure to maximize floor area with seamless and logical transitions between each space. Moving inward, the kitchen is flanked by indoor and outdoor dining areas and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, bringing in an extraordinary amount of natural light while allowing for a seamless outdoor/indoor connection. A neutral color palette is incorporated throughout, along with dark wood detailing, stone accents, and textured cabinetry, giving each room a rich and cozy feel.

Every inch of this small lot is dynamically used to fit the contemporary design aesthetic of the homeowner. The lines of the exterior are very much an artistic statement, including the use of textured, warm yet durable building materials. Central to the three-story structure is the sculptural staircase that seamlessly connects all three floors of the home while allowing natural light to fill in the interior spaces. The upper level which includes the kitchen, living room, dining room, and powder room flows to the outdoor viewing deck and its unobstructed views from Catalina Island to Malibu. The bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the middle level, providing a private and restful retreat. The ground floor includes a multipurpose room and bathroom off the garage, designed with the beach lifestyle in mind where the boundary between the outside and inside disappears, creating a harmonious space for the clients to use according to their needs.
“The goal was to develop the property to its maximum capacity, allowing for all the amenities of a larger property. In the beginning, our clients understood the program was aggressive, but they had all the hopes that we would be able to deliver. It was rewarding to witness their satisfaction with all that was accomplished on all counts in this project, particularly with the aesthetics and the efficient use of all corners of the property.” — Luis Murillo, AIA
