Luis Murillo, AIA
Luis was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, where he also received his bachelor’s degree in Architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 1994. Although his birthplace was in the mountains, he always dreamed of living near the ocean where he could embrace his passion for an outdoor lifestyle. In 1997, the opportunity to work at a Los Angeles based design firm presented itself, so he chose to move his young, growing family to California. With his fun personality and serious dedication to architectural design, Luis’s career flourished in Los Angeles. In early 2010 Luis established LMD Architecture Studio. Focusing on his own professional practice he aims to achieve design excellence through efficiency, innovation, and responsible use of materials and forms, always motivated by his Colombian roots and ‘can do’ attitude. His return client list is a testimony to his joyful work ethic, innovative mastery of design and devotion to be personally present in every phase of a project. Luis continues pursuing his goal to orchestrate architectural design solutions that are integral, thoughtful, honest, and responsive to the environment and to his clients’ true needs and desires. Luis has been doing architectural design in the Los Angeles area for over 20 years. During his free time, he enjoys music and riding his bike with his son Andrés.
Marcela was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Universidad Del Rosario. Marcela is Luis’ wife and although their roots will always be in Colombia, she has enjoyed raising their two children, Laura, and Andrés, in Southern California. Marcela’s talent is in the realm of business planning and finance. She enjoys the ever-changing world of marketing and is adept at coordinating all the moving parts to work together toward the next step in growth for the company. She is reliable and is an ‘out of the box’ problem solver. Marcela’s brilliant energy and ideas add to the dynamics and enrichment of LMD Architecture Studio. During her free time, Marcela enjoys hiking with friends and doing yoga with her daughter Laura.
Amritha obtained her master’s degree in Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). In 2018, shortly after receiving her degree, she joined LMD Architecture Studio. She is on her path to AIA licensure, continuing to grow in her knowledge of architecture, mastering her skills in construction details, renderings and documentation. Of all aspects of the architectural profession, her interest lies in designing, a talent she discovered when she was a young artist sketching and drawing prolifically. Influenced also by her father’s occupation as a civil engineer, she grew up seeing large-scale projects develop from start to finish. Blossoming in this environment, she naturally entered the field of architecture. Amritha looks forward to traveling in her free time and enjoys visiting new places.
Luis received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Texas Tech University College of Architecture at El Paso, daily traveling back and forth from his home in Juarez, Mexico. From his experience growing up on an international border, Luis is passionate about the impact that architecture has on people culturally and socio-economically. Carrying this passion, he found a place to explore his interests in academics, theory and critical architecture at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, California, where he pursued and obtained his Master of Architecture. He looks forward to his personal growth in Los Angeles and his professional growth working with the LMD Architecture Studio team. Luis plays on a competitive soccer team and enjoys any sports that challenge him to improve and learn.
Andrés was born and raised in Torrance, California. He is currently a student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona where he expects to earn his bachelor’s degree in Architecture, class of 2023. He plans to become a licensed architect and work for many different designers to learn the broadest vision of design. With this experience, he hopes to expand his education by pursuing a master’s degree and become a professor with an emphasis in sustainable design.
As an intern at LMD Architecture Studio, Andrés is learning the internal workings of a design firm including drafting, code research and establishing rapport with other professionals. Since working at LMD Architecture Studio and being part of the process of seeing an idea become a physical structure, Andrés has realized that he has chosen the right career.
In his free time, Andrés is an avid cyclist, both on and off road. As a South Bay local, he will always see the beach and the outdoors as his playground.
